Quilter’s Cottage, LLC is an independent, full-service
quilt shop located in the charming village of Fallbrook in northern
San Diego County. The shop has been in continuous operation since 1990,
and under the
ownership
of Jan Chow and Diane Miller since June 2005. Under our ownership the
shop has moved and expanded twice and now occupies 2100 square feet
of inspirational space for the quilter, seamstress, crafter, and home
decor sewer.
We have recently become authorized Bernina
sewing machine dealers, and carry the complete line of
Swiss quality precision sewing machines. The line includes machines
in all price ranges, from the entry level to the top of the line 730E,
a Microsoft Windows powered computer that sews. Both Jan and Diane have
an extensive quilting and sewing background, and are passionate, longtime
Bernina machine owners. Between them, they own five Bernina sewing machines.
The Quilter’s
Cottage carries over 1500 bolts of fabric from such well-known manufacturers
as Andover/Makower, Robert Kaufman, Hoffman California International,
Moda, Timeless Treasures, South Seas/Wilmington Prints, Kona Bay, Clothworks,
Indo-US, Henry Glass, RJR, Diamond Textiles, Island Batiks, Maywood
Studios, Northcott, P&B textiles, Benartex, Quilting Treasures,
and more. We are particularly known for our extensive collection of
Asian themed fabrics and beautiful batiks, although we have a wide selection
that would appeal to almost any fabric lover.
We stock several thread lines including Coats & Clark, Mettler,
YLI, Superior, Aurifil, and will soon be adding a complete line of thread
suitable for machine embroidery.
The shop stocks several types of batting, including Hobbs and Quilter’s
Choice. Also on hand are items such as pillow forms, polyester stuffing,
bumper pads for baby cribs, and other similar items.
An entire wall of quilting and sewing notions are available,
and
we make every effort to fill customer special orders for items we don’t
have on a regular basis. Literally thousands of quilting/sewing/home
deco books and patterns are available with numerous shop samples on
display to provide inspiration. We have a special interest in garment
and accessory sewing, and you will find many completed samples on display
in the shop.
The Quilter’s Cottage has numerous kits available for purchase,
from baby quilts to garments, to king size block of the month projects.
Many of the kits are unique to the shop, as they are designed by us.
We offer a full calendar
of classes ranging from the complete novice to the most
experienced quilter or sewer. Classes are offered nearly every day in
such varied categories as beginning quilting, hand and machine quilting,
apparel sewing including aprons, jackets, vests, and pants, apparel
sewing for babies and children, hand appliqué, sewing for the
home, and accessories such as placemats and table runners, purses, totes,
and scarves. In addition, we also offer classes on Mastery for new Bernina
sewing machine owners. Our classes and activities are all listed in
our quarterly newsletter which is currently mailed to those who request.
One Friday evening each month we host a “Strip Club”, which
includes dinner and sewing with friends. An easy pattern is chosen each
month and participants choose their own fabrics ahead of time. We provide
“Valet Sewing”, by precutting the kits beforehand and providing
much of the pressing and ripping during the evening. Participants leave
with a mostly completed quilt top. This fall we had a one year anniversary
tea where quilters brought their finished quilts or tops for a Show
and Tell—one of the quilter’s favorite activities.
The shop is an enthusiastic participant in two Quilt Runs (also known
as Shop Hops) each year, which encourage thousands of quilters to visit
each shop to experience the unique flavor each one offers. We also travel
to numerous area Quilt Shows and set up a vendor booth to sell fabric,
kits, gift items, and demonstrate the latest popular quilting notions
and gadgets. We organize an annual bus trip to Southern California’s
premier quilt show, Road to California in January each year. In the
works is a proposed trip to this year’s inaugural Long Beach International
Quilt Show in July.
We are involved in the community as 4H leaders for Sewing and Quilting,
and have about 15 area youth sewing in the shop three afternoons each
month. We participate in the Quilt Pink project, providing a place where
quilters can make quilts that are auctioned for the benefit of Breast
Cancer Research. We actively support the active Fallbrook Quilt Guild’s
more than 150 members.
Jan and Diane are passionate about sewing and quilting, and love to
share that passion with others. One of our main goals is to provide
the assistance, encouragement or education you need to finish your projects
and move on to the next one. We try to help eliminate “quilt guilt”
that comes from unfinished or unsuccessful projects.
We want to be your full-service quilt shop!
